After a highly successful run of after parties for festivals including DEMF in Detroit, WMC in Miami, Decibel fest in Seattle, and Minitek in NY, Cheap sunglasses has branched out into doing one offs all over the US starting in San Francisco with Ame and Dixon. Imagine the most perfect weather for a Sunday in November, outside at the legendary End Up, a near capacity crowd, and a 6 hour set from the Innervisions Label heads with everyone wearing custom printed neon “Cheap” sunglasses. Thats what the first Cheap Sunglasses party that was not based around a festival.
DEMF may have been the highlight of all the events with a sell out crowd 6 days prior to the event. The amazing concept oriented flyers were not even able to be passed out at the festival, as no one but pre-sale ticket holders were allowed in due the event selling out via pre-sales only. With some amazing live sets early by Mikael Stavostrand and Bruno Pronsato setting the tone early, Jamie Jones and Martin Landsky absolutely demolished the place. Such pioneers such as Dan Bell and Sammy Dee could be seen in the crowd giving a look of utter satisfaction for the Cheap Sunglasses boys first offering for the DEMF festival ever.
The first party you do should always be what will set the standard for what is to come, but for Cheap Sunglasses, no one had any idea the bar would be set so high. When you gather some of the best DJ's in the world to a very unique open-air venue with the best Dynachord sound system money can procure, all while enjoying sunlight, you are aiming for perfection. Everyone that came to the first Cheap Sunglasses party at WMC Miami 2008 was given a pair of neon custom printed sunglasses with the logos of the respective production companies of Taimur Agha, Larry Ursini and Memo Erkaya,Uddermadness, Bar13. No one knew this would lead to one of the top US promotion teams, but everyone there knew this was the party of the conference. In addition 300 neon green “snap” bracelets printed with the same logos, and the newly resurrected Hallucination LTD logo were also “snapped” onto unsuspecting party goers. Everyone was surprised to get a snap bracelet, but they were seen all over the conference the rest of the week. It’s the little things that really make a party special. The lineup speaks for its self, Martin Landsky, Konrad Black, Magda, Italoboyz, Glacier LIVE, Three, Matt Tolfry, Marc Asken, Derek Plaslaiko, and Acid Circus.
Minitek may have left some people wanting more, but anyone that made it to Cielo left asking who the [email protected]
$K is Matthias Tanzmann. We are lucky enough to have him back this year exclusively for conference, but on that Sunday closing party of Minitek he was incredible. “Call in Sick to Work” was the theme for this event, as it was a Sunday night, not on a holiday. The Cheap Sunglasses heads thought up some pretty provocative and down right scandalous “excuses” why not to come to work, and printed them up hundreds at a time littering the club with them. To this day they can be seen on fridges, Facebook, and scrapbooks everywhere. The legend Baby Ford also made a cross the pond appearance to close the night out with class and respect.
As you can see, Cheap Sunglasses is nothing short of concept driven, highly succesfull events with one thing that comes first, the music. At no event will you see skimpy sound, or poor design. You will walk away from these events begging for another one, hopefully in your hometown next. Look for Cheap Sunglasses in '09 in NY, WMC, DEMF, MUTEK, Berlin and SONAR....
