  • Manchester's Andrew Carthy is a consummate DJ and producer who combines a perfectionist ethic and encyclopaedic music knowledge with a welcoming, unpretentious approach. DJing and running his own events since the early '90s, his long sets wind—and sometimes leap—through styles, moods and eras, satisfying both experts and newcomers. The playful illustrations adorning his artwork and events, and a generally self-deprecating character (the album title Trouser Jazz just about says it all) all point to a warm-heartedness that's been key to his longevity. Back in March he released a DJ Kicks mix that displayed once again his keen ear for pacing and contrast, and the enduring quality of his own long and prolific career as a producer. He spoke to Ryan Keeling for the Exchange soon after lockdown began in the UK.
