  • Living between Freetown in Sierra Leone and London, multidisciplinary artist Duval Timothy's practice spans painting, sculpture, food, video, textile design and photography, along with an arresting catalogue of music. He's contributed to records by Solange and Loyle Carner, and is a frequent collaborator of Mica Levi, Vegyn and Twin Shadow. Having released the single and video for "Slave" in June, Timothy's new record is coming soon on his label Carrying Colour. In conversation with Martha Pazienti-Caiden, we hear of the ideas behind exhibitions like Mahsiwel, which explored the rich identity of South London's Lewisham borough using language abstractions, strikingly coloured textiles and memories of 1977's Battle Of Lewisham. We also learn of his experience building a studio and learning traditional weaving techniques in Freetown, the artist-owned ethos behind Carrying Colour and his commitment to wearing only blue clothing.
