  • A key figure in Detroit's vast musical ecosystem, Waajeed has been invested in music and art since his early days growing up in the Eastside's Conant Gardens neighbourhood. His wide-ranging creative practice has included everything from photography, to painting, jewelry-making and production. His studio work is similarly versatile and reflects his roots in hip-hop, R&B and house, earning him production credits with the likes of Dwele and Cee-Lo Green. He was also a close friend and collaborator of the legendary hip-hop group Slum Village, stepping in as the group's DJ on early tours. Since launching Dirt Tech Rek in 2012, his output has focused on the club. This paid off in recent years with standout tracks like "Mother," an album, From The Dirt, and an official mix and compilation released via Carl Craig's Detroit Love series. Underground And Black's Ash Lauryn spoke with Waajeed last year and heard how his unique background and personal philosophy combine into an inspiring creative spirit.
