  • The creative force behind Munich's BLITZ club tells his story.

  • Despite spending over 25 years in nightlife, David Muallem never thought he'd open his own club. But he did exactly that in 2017 with BLITZ, which turned a disused space in Munich's Deutsche Museum into one of Europe's premier venues. A DJ since age 14, he always saw his place as being behind the decks and he continues to be a regular fixture in European clubs. But his direction took a turn after being hired as Bob Beaman's creative director—another of Munich's key dance music spots—and it wouldn't be long before he dove into the all-consuming tasks of scouting a venue, building a team and navigating the myriad challenges that go into developing a club of his own. In conversation with Carlos Hawthorn, Muallem shines a light on exactly those little things that make a great club what it is. No stranger to the delicate balance of elements behind any special venue, we hear of the thousands of little details one has to consider when developing a vision, the importance of giving structure to your ideas and how to ride the ebb and flow of anxiety and satisfaction that faces even the most successful club operation.
