  • Over the past five years, Nabihah Iqbal released a series EPs as Throwing Shade, mining an intriguing leftfield sound for labels like Ninja Tune and No Pain In Pop. But at the tail end of 2017, Iqbal dropped the moniker and released an album under her given name for the first time. It marked the beginning of a new era for an artist that's achieved much more than releasing great records. After hearing the Kora for the first time at London's School of Oriental and African Studies, Iqbal signed up for ethnomusicology, giving her an insight into the cross-cultural flows of music history. After later completing an MPhil in African history, she did human rights work as a lawyer in South Africa, all while honing her skills as an artist and DJ, the latter especially with her long-running NTS show. In conversation with Christine Kakaire, Iqbal pieces together the experiences that shaped her steadily-evolving sound, shedding light on the reasoning behind dropping the alias and detailing her ongoing relationship with South Africa.
