  • Monika Kruse is a big-room specialist. Active since the early '90s, the German artist is among the country's best-known DJs, with links to institutions such as Time Warp, Tresor and Munich's shuttered Ultraschall club. Raised in Bavaria but based in Berlin, Kruse pushes a powerful, groove-led style suited to festival stages and cavernous warehouse spaces. But it wasn't always about massive rooms and ice cannons. Kruse's first forays into dance music were very much DIY, throwing parties in abandoned spaces around Munich while DJing hip-hop, funk and house music in bars. By the late '90s, Kruse was one of Germany's most popular DJs, and remains so today. Last month, she dropped into our Berlin office for a chat about her career so far. Looking back on her early years in Munich, Kruse spoke about No Historical Backspin, an event series promoting diversity and tolerance, her Terminal M label and the path from teenage vinyl addict to career DJ.
