  • In a review of Unsound Festival's 2016 edition, Will Lynch observed that the weeklong music and arts event "doesn't just present modern music; it helps it evolve." Since its first edition in Kraków in 2003, Unsound has become not only Poland's most visible international music event, but an influential member of a network of likeminded experimental festivals around the world. As executive director, Gosia Płysa has played a significant role in its development. Since 2006 she has worked alongside Mat Schulz to grow Unsound from a weeklong DIY event into a globally renowned destination for fans of forward-thinking music with satellite events around the world. Płysa spoke with music journalist Lisa Blanning for the first instalment of Resident Advisor's partnership with the Berlin-based initiative Salt + Sass, a series of public talks with women in the industry run by Kat Young, Christine Kakaire and Elissa Stolman. In this conversation, Płysa reveals an insider's perspective on running an annual festival that's internally engaged with Poland's political climate and externally engaged with issues of diversity, as well as the challenges that face ambitious women who seek careers in the music industry.
