- Matthew Cutler's music has that rare quality: you know it as soon as you hear it. As Lone, he makes dreamy, uplifting electronic records with a hint of melancholia, drawing influence from the emotive work of producers like Aphex Twin, Boards Of Canada and Madlib. He openly admits to trying to copy the work of his heroes when he was first starting out—but then he was just ten years old. Fast-forward to 2016 and he's got six albums under his belt (and another 20 on his hard-drive at home), including one on Actress's Werkdiscs and three on R&S. You can see why he's proven such a good fit for the latter label—a big part of Lone's thing is presenting fresh takes on '90s UK dance music, from ambient and electronica through to rave-indebted bangers. His latest full-length, Levitate, revisits the technicolour hardcore of 2012's Galaxy Garden, only this time meshed together with rampant jungle breaks. Cutler dropped by our London office the week the LP was announced, unpacking the methods behind his singular sound with staff writer Carlos Hawthorn.
