Founder Steffen Charles tells the story behind one of techno's biggest nights.
As Steffen Charles tells it, Time Warp began as a local concern—the rave, first held in Ludwigshafen in 1994, grew out of his record shop in Mannheim. Today, Charles and his team put together Time Warp events on three continents, and their flagship event, spread across half a dozen dance floors at Mannheim's Maimarkthalle, attracts tens of thousands of ravers from across Europe and beyond. (They also run a festival in Croatia called Sonus, the Love Family Park open-air and one-offs like Sven Väth's 50th birthday party.) But however big the brand has become, the events themselves remain family affairs, with lineups drawn from a tightknit crew of DJs and live acts, many of whom have been playing for Time Warp since its early days. We were curious to hear more about their history and what goes on behind the scenes, so on the eve of their latest edition, Jordan Rothlein headed to Mannheim for the scoop.
