- The Macro man on classical music, Balkan music and drum and bass.
- Berlin-based DJ/producer Stefan Goldmann may just be one of the most high-minded artists working in the 4/4 sphere. Whether it's re-editing Stravinsky, putting out a five 7-inch box set of electroacoustic music or incorporating flute and koto into otherwise normal house music, the Macro label boss rarely lets a release go by without putting a unique stamp on its contents. He can't help but laugh about it, saying that he and co-imprint head Finn Johannsen are constantly discussing Goldmann's "concept of the week."
Goldmann had plenty of chances to get into music through his father, classical composer Friedrich Goldmann, but he instead found his own way. Balkan music, early drum & bass and Masters at Work were all early catalysts. And while you can't quite hear any of them in what he does now, the energy is somehow very much alive in his studied yet dynamic productions. We talked about all of the above late last month, as well as why Goldmann's style of DJing has changed drastically in the past year.
