  • LTJ Bukem is one of the most famous names in drum & bass, a UK-bred producer and DJ who helped to smooth out some of the rougher edges of hardcore in the late '80s and early '90s. For some, that meant Bukem, born Daniel Williamson, was offering a much-needed cerebral alternative to the rough-and-tumble jungle sound that was also exploding around that time. And Bukem, along with the artists he was signing to his Good Looking label, became a leading light for what many were calling "intelligent" drum & bass. He's never liked the term, though—he's long made it clear that his end of hardcore was no more proper than what was happening elsewhere along the continuum. With a musical upbringing full of piano lessons and early exposure to classical music and jazz fusion, he came into early rave culture with a melodic streak that felt absolutely of a piece with his surrounds. In this career-spanning interview with Joe Muggs, Bukem touches on all this while discussing his busy present and ambitious future.
