  • The story behind one of Berlin's most famous clubs.

  • Watergate is one of Berlin's most celebrated nightclubs. It wasn't always clear that this was going to be the case. At first, they tried out having drum & bass nights—a genre on the decline at the time in the German capital. They were also in an area—Kreuzberg—that raised eyebrows in a scene dominated by clubs located in other, more fashionable locations. A tightening of the programming to high-grade house and techno, a stunning river view and an LED ceiling later, though, and it has become the stuff of legend. As Watergate begins the celebration of its anniversary with a free concert from Henrik Schwarz' live band this Saturday, we took the opportunity to catch up with Uli Wombacher—the club's main booker—to talk about the history of the club.
