WOLFGANG GARTNER : First to be labeled 'The next Deadmau5'
Currently residing in Austin, Texas, this 26-year-old California transplant has been producing dance music since he was 11 years old. While most kids were playing Nintendo and after-school sports, Youngman was syncing a drum machine to a keyboard and teaching himself to make tracks.
The early years of Joe Youngman’s discography boasted releases and remixes on dozens of respected house labels like Tango, Om Records, Naked Music, Doubledown, and his own imprints; Fetish Recordings & Jackin Tracks. He donned a slew of production aliases including Mario Fabriani, White Collar Criminals, Frequent Fliers, and a few other colorful guises that helped to spice up an exceedingly frequent release schedule.
In 2004, Youngman signed onto the esteemed Blue Collar Entertainment roster and started focusing more time on his other passion: DJ’ing. The move sparked a series of global tours and increased his exposure to audiences around the world. To date, Joey Youngman has performed on every continent. From Japan to South Africa, Russia, Ibiza, and everywhere in between, the air miles have stacked up along-side his innate ability to work a dancefloor.
2007 marked a major step in Youngman’s career with the introduction of his new moniker: Wolfgang Gartner. The new name was created to explore a new sound, without feeling confined to the musical boundaries of his previous projects. “I was getting bored with house, with that whole sound,” he says. “I basically hadn’t evolved musically since the late 90's and had been rehashing the same ideas over and over. Something just snapped and I decided it was time for a complete change.”
It was apparent from the first Wolfgang Gartner release that Youngman was onto something big. In a period of less than a year, Wolfgang Gartner had landed 3 top-10 singles on Beatport.com’s sales chart, a Pete Tong “essential new tune of the week” on BBC’s Radio 1, two video game licenses, and a plethora of DJ support and accolades within the industry. It was early 2008 when Youngman made the decision to pursue the Wolfgang Gartner project full-time. “It’s so hard to do 2 things really well at the same time,” he says. “I realized that I had to pick something and stick to it. So I decided that this new style is the direction I want to go, and to focus all my time and energy on Wolfgang Gartner.” We know you will not be disappointed - his sound is as dirty as a gentleman can get away with.
Their sinful sounds draw inspiration from early R&S releases, Joey Beltram, right through to modern masterminds such as M.A.N.D.Y, Plasmik and Trentemoller. They use their combined experiences of minimalism to produce dark sinister sounds mixed in with twisted vocals and unnerving foundations, whilst remaining accessible to the crowds.
Connoisseur of the scene Oliver Huntemann, snatched up Spektre’s early releases for his own label “Dance Electric.” Since then the pair have earnt admiration and support from Sven Vath to Tim Sheridan, Audiojack to Fergie. Championing their sound, tracks such as “A Glimpse Outside” became immediate hits - launched straight onto DJ Mags cover cd. Further successes like “Haze” and “Minimalist Machinist” gained huge popularity in the clubs internationally, played by the likes of Mike Monday and Audiofly while one of Spektres offerings “Hover” was thrashed out at Cocoon by the legendary Sven Vath on New Years Eve, sure signs that this pair had indeed arrived.
Spektre have been unleashing their dirty live sets in clubs up and down the country, casting their spell on thousands. With their insatiable energy for touring, 2008 sees their unique sound reaching the shores of South America, Russia & Ukraine, with a album showcase performance at last summers Glade Festival, there is no doubt this year will be as full of the same hectic gig schedule as the last. Expect to witness their undefined sets storming through clubland and expect to walk away breathless!
Check out their just released remix of KOEN GROENEVELD'S Wake turbulence - one of our favourties at the moment :-)
An exciting future lies ahead for Spektre with their debut album released to Tim Sheridans VVVWI recordings, pushing them out onto that minimal edge even further. Alongside a demanding release schedule on several different labels, one thing is certain, this year Spektre can do no wrong.
As an initiator of the legendary The Zoo Project ibiza & Safaaari parties, with homebases at Privilege Ibiza, Vienna cult clubs Flex & Sass, EME Austria and several notorious parties in his native Bavaria to keep the underground alive in the middle of nowhere, things don’t seem to be slowing down for Franz 'DEFEX' Hager. Fuelled solely by Red Bull, the 29 years old German sent waves through the underground music community of 2008.
His audience motivated tune selection of deep, minimal-tech house and techno, churned out with the help of his Turntables, Traktor Scratch, FX devices and his beloved drum machine has resulted in Defex being found behind the decks at some of the Europe’s most respected and original parties. 2008 witnessed Defex at the Dortmund Love Parade, Tresor Berlin, in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Privilege Ibiza & many more.
His most famous residency is of course, Ibiza’s cult Saturday day party, The Zoo Project, which he is also a proud founder of. Labelled this years "success story" by Dj mag, where "ego’s are left at the door and replaced by the clubbers inner animal",
The Zoo Project is the only open-air event left in ibiza. Playing alongside artists such as Jamie Jones, Mr C, Shonky, Anthony Collins, Sis, Jose De Divina and Monika Kruse, Defex’s famed final sets never fail to leave "one more tune" ringing in the crowd’s ears long after the party has finished. The self-confessed musicgeek certainly knows where the hammer is at and is definitely one to watch out for in 2009.
