Karnival & Kapital join forces for a Hogmanay special to welcome Windsor, Ontario’s second most famous techno artist; Marc Houle. Growing up across the water from Detroit with Ritchie Hawtin, it was perhaps inevitable that a love of 80s computer games and synthesisers would lead to him joining Minus.
Houle became one of the label’s staple artists, producing four fine albums and numerous releases over a decade, including many minimal-defining tracks like Bay of Figs, On It and Techno Vocals. Along with Magda and Troy Pierce, he broke sub-label Items & Things off from Minus in 2011, aiming to make and release a more diverse range of music.
Ironically even though DJs of all sorts play Marc's records, you wont find Houle delivering a DJ set anytime soon. A comitted live performer, he arrives at each gig equipped with six albums worth of material (including last years playful Cola Party) plus dozens of favourites, singles, remixes & collaborations with the likes of Joris Voorn, Miss Kitten, Popof & Julian Jeweil. No matter what time or tempo Marc Houle has exactly the right Marc Houle tunes needed!
The other man on hand to make sure this New Year’s Eve isn’t another anticlimax is Nick Dow. Having played an incredible live set at Kapital's last NYE party the boys were quick to chuck his name into the hat for this years joint event with Karnival. Now living in Paris, but hailing from the Scottish borders, he was catapulted into the mainstream by winning a contest to remix Sébastian Léger’s Majuro. Talent and persistence has led to several more EP releases on two of the industries most prolific labels Herzbluts and Traum Schallplatten. In his own words Nick explains “I want to make meaningful music, music that tells a story and takes the listener on a journey. Finding the line between club and listening music is always something i strive towards. If I can make people dance and think at the same time then I know I’m doing something right”.
With 2 incredible live acts confirmed and a collection of some of Edinburgh's finest in support, Karnival and Kapital's first NYE together is fast falling into the "not to be missed" category
