Virunga is a series of bespoke and intimate electronic music events, curated by Guerilla Agency, in association with High Definition Festival.
Delivering a mystical new concept for London clubbing, incorporating bespoke production across some of the capital’s most unconventional venues and spaces, expect to be transported to the sacred realms of the distinctively endangered Mountain Guerilla...
This is the place where all the guerillas meet, and under the cover of darkness with only the luna illumination, they consort to the deep sounds of the Virunga terrain.
Meet Our Guests
Following a memorable launch party at Great Suffolk Street Warehouse on February 7th, and an equally enjoyable Birmingham edition at Boxxed Warehouse earlier this month, Virunga are excited to return to London for our second instalment in the capital.
Joining us for an evening of unadulterated underground sounds, at one of Brixton's best-kept and intimate venues, we welcome Ferro and Makcim, two of Europe's hottest up and comers.
Integral members of the VBX family, arguably Amsterdam's most exciting collective of aspiring audio pioneers, our esteemed guests have supported everyone from Ricardo Vilallobos and Raresh to tINI and Enzo Siragusa, whilst gracing some of the industry's most revered events, including Awakenings, Fabric, HYTE and Fuse.
Completing our programme will be two of Guerilla Agency's most exciting prospects, in tINI & the Gang and Fuse favourites, Pelle and fellow Dutchman Roon.
Fresh from his debut appearance at London's legendary Fabric, Ferro emerged at the age of 17 with learned sets that were as influenced by classical music as they were jazz and science fiction.
His sets wave together intricate rhythms, plenty of mood and never fail to work a dance-floor. Unsurprisingly given that he is an Audio Engineer graduate, so too does Ferro produce his own music. So far coming on labels like Fuse, Moss Co and Karton, he is fast fomenting his own signature sound. It is a sound that comes caked in a vintage dust, sounding as though his beats have been maturing in a draw before being unleashed on the world.
They are organic, warm and inviting, and it is Ferro’s lasting goal to make all of his music using genuine hardware and fully analogue tools. So too does he hope to collaborate with similarly minded musicians in future, at the same time as forging ahead with his own unique sonic identity.
Just like the vodka from his birthplace, Moscow-born Dutch-resident MAKCIM always fuels the party spirit with his intoxicating and powerful sets, mixing house and techno to create refreshingly deep and sexy grooves.
A colourful childhood in Russia, painted with the sounds of Joy Division, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Blondie as well as jazz greats Miles Davis and Marcus Miller, meant that by the time MAKCIM moved to the Netherlands, at the age of 12, he knew music was going to be a huge part of his life.
And now, when MAKCIM is not in the studio with his friend and production partner Levi Verspeek crafting new tunes, he can be seen and heard spinning vinyl at Berlin’s Club der Visionaere, Hoppetosse and Arena club as well as in party hotspots across New York, Moscow, Amsterdam, Paris and Ibiza.
With new releases on Raum Musik and Apollonia and gigs in the 2015 pipeline, it’s as clear as vodka that if you want to get funked up, then MAKCIM will mix you a perfect cocktail of house and techno tunes for deep and long all night party play.
Pelle & Roon
Hailing from Haarlem, just outside of Amsterdam, 2014 really was a year to remember for this charismatic Dutch duo. Still aged just 22 and 23 respectively, 2014 saw Pelle & Roon staking their rightful claim to become future purveyors of an intelligently curated sound which remains true to its underground origins.
Enjoying a debut release on Fuse’s sub-label Infuse, Pelle & Roon combined their prowess behind the turntables on numerous occasions throughout 2014, both across Europe and the World.
Gracing the likes of Sankeys in both Ibiza and New York, Rotterdam’s Toffler, Amsterdam’s infamous Studio 80, Lightbox London and Chalet in Berlin, their most notable appearances came for Fuse, at both their home at Village Underground as well as during Amsterdam Dance Event, not forgetting an equally memorable appearance at tINI & the Gang in Ibiza this summer.
But whilst Pelle & Roon are renowned for their synergy, when united both in the studio and behind the decks, 2015 will see them both releasing solo projects on some very exciting imprints, including ‘Thirteen’, the new label from Randall M, Scott Kemp's 'NoVus' and Bolumar's 'Rooted' imprints, and of course Pelle’s very own ‘Karton’ label, which will celebrate its 4th birthday next year as well.
