Temple Works is a former flax mill in Holbeck, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.
SHHH_IFT have been asked to curate the Techno element of the ambitious and exciting TEMPLE TIME project being hosted at Temple Works.
This will be the first of two parties, and we've decided to use the TIME theme to celebrate the evolution of Techno.
Our first party worships the influencers - and our 2nd party (on Friday April 11th) will celebrate the influenced - today's freshest talent on the Techno scene.
So… for this party… the influencers…
In terms of influence on the UK techno scene, SLAM are perhaps second to none – and as such, certainly worthy of worship as part of Temple Time.
In the past two decades the Scottish based duo have defined techno in Scotland, cultivated many artists of note on their Soma label, and remixed everyone from Daft Punk to Underworld. The legendary pair, comprising of Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have travelled far and wide, leaving scorch marks on dance floors worldwide, touring Australia, the USA , Europe, South America and Japan. They hold residencies at three of the UK's best clubs (Pressure & the Sub Club in their home town of Glasgow and Fabric in London) and each year curate the dance arena at T In The Park.
Their Soma Records label hit its 20th birthday in 2011, which is a great achievement in any industry never mind the fickle music business. In this prestigious year, Slam were also nominated as the ‘Greatest Dance Act of All Time’ in the institutional UK dance music magazine Mixmag.
The last few years have been the most prolific period in Slam’s career. Performing dynamic sets at many leading festivals including Time Warp, Mayday, Bestival, Glade, Awakenings, Glastonbury, Monegros and T In The Park, they have also played at some of the world’s best clubs including the legendary Womb in Tokyo, Cocoon in Frankfurt, Rex in Paris and Berlin's infamous Watergate and Berghain.
Now… it’s Time to Worship SLAM at Temple Works. Temple Time.
G-Man aka Gez Varley
In keeping with the theme of Temple Time, as one half of one of the most influential underground electronic music outfits of all time, LFO – Gez Varley is truly worthy of worship.
It was in fact LFO's early 90's seminal LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) that turned SHHH_IFT's promoter Richard Hilson (along with most of his other teenage school friends) from a Guns & Roses loving early teen, to a dance music crazed, turntable buying, beat freak. Without LFO, there would be no SHHH_IFT.
Gez left LFO in 1996 and went on to do G-man as a solo project.
Over the years Gez has recorded for labels such as Warp, Force-inc, Gigolo, Swim, K7, white noise and +8 and worked with producers which include Richie Hawtin, Karl Bartos , Marco Carola, Mark Bell and Thomas P Heckmann.
His remixes have been for musical outfits as equally iconic, and include Radio Head, YMO, Art of noise ,Afika Bambaataa, Laurent Garnier and Alan Wilder (Depeche Mode).
Gez has played most of the legendary Techno clubs and festivals world wide, such as Nature One Festival (Germany), Sonar Festival (Barcelona), Berghain (Berlin), The Omen (Frankfurt), The Orbit (Leeds), The Liquid Rooms (Tokyo), New Music Seminar (New York)…and many more.
Now… it’s Time to Worship G-man at Temple Works. Temple Time.
