Cultural Vibes Summer Solstice Special
For this years Cultural Vibes Re-Union we have decided to celebrate the 2019 summer soltice weekend with the very people who provided the inspiration for the club in the first place, the one & only DiY.
Nottiingham’s DiY collective helped bring proper House Music back to the South West via both their Free Parties and selected gigs throughout the region during 1991 & early 92. The Rave Scene had by then become one long extended breakbeat with little or no house music being played whatsoever. With regular club gigs in both Exeter & Exmouth in 91 & 92 there was finally a chance for quality house music to shine once more courtesy of Simon DK, Pezz, Digs & Woosh, Jack, Pip & Emma.
Its hard to explain 27 years later just what it meant to so many of us back then but safe to say for some of us it was a born again moment & one that would change our lives forever.
Basically no DiY no Cultural Vibes, period, and that Vibes fans is a fact!
Cultural Vibes started at the Quay Club in October 1992 with one mission & one mission only, to get big enough to be able to book DiY to come & play in Plymouth. It didn’t take long either & just nine weeks later on 16th January 1993 Digs & Woosh made the journey down to The Warehouse for the very first time & blew us all away. From that date on DiY Dj’s made the journey down to Plymouth each & every month without fail for the next 18 months helping the club to grow from its humble beginnings to the absolute behemoth it became.
With DiY celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year it made sense fo us to to double up once more on the Summer Solstice Weekend & do what we always did so well together back then……… knock it out of the park.
The plans are a full night of pure fun & frolics at The Hanging Gardens, where we celebrated our 26th Anniversary in December 2018 so well. One room will see a full 7hr DiY take over with Grace/Digs, Jack & Pezz playing all night long in our fabled Bunker Room. Our Conservatory Room will see a full Cultural Vibes resident line up featuring Haze, Verdi & Phill Jubb with a storming headline set provided by UK House Music Legends X-Press 2.
London duo X-Press 2 have been at the vanguard of British electronic music for two decades now. Whether it’s as musicians, DJs or re-mixers, Darren Rock and Darren House (Rocky & Diesel) share the same sense of musical discovery that first united them on the acid-house dance floors of Shoom and Spectrum and the Balearic playgrounds of Ibiza. It’s that pioneering spirit that fuelled early nineties underground anthems such as the percussive, US-influenced ‘Muzik Express’ and ‘London X Press’ and which has informed their three full length albums for Skint. The pair are creators of cross-over deep house classics like ‘Lazy’ and ‘Give It’ with vocalists as unlikely yet inspired as David Byrne and Kurt Wagner, as well as purveyors of utterly-contemporary
underground tracks for the likes of K7, Defected and Get Physical.
Not forgetting their DJ Mag Award, Ivor Novello win, and 12 UK chart hits including a UK No.1, X-Press 2 have achieved their success whilst remaining true to the original acid house ethos, staying authentic and relevant in an age of flash-in-the-pan identikit DJ/Producers. As well as their own releases, X-Press 2 are in demand as re-mixers and have applied their accomplished production chops to music from a wide range of artists including Darren Emerson (Underworld), Seamus Haji, Nitzer Ebb, Britney Spears and Fatboy Slim.
As club performers the pair continue to delight club and festival audiences worldwide with an ever-impressive command of multiple decks, delivering the full range of quality, party-friendly 21st century house music. Restless, creative, constantly reinventing their sound, just like the house music they’ve championed for two decades, X-Press 2 continue to do exactly what we expect them to – keep dance floors moving, all over the world.
Massive thanks to Chum for his first Vibes flyer in 25 years, a true piece of Vibes history delivering the goods once again!
