  • Emerson Todd might be an unknown to the majority of RA readers, but in his native Australia he's been making waves in the electronic music scene. Todd started out as a deep house producer and DJ on the bar scene, until became one of the resident DJs at New Zealand's Kase, Auckland's only superclub. His bar gigs helped him hone his deeper sound, but his residency at the Kase gave him a chance to play on the same stage as some of the world's biggest DJs. He's currently a resident at Sydney's Lost Baggage night, which has put on DJs such as Alex Smoke, Aril Brikha and Joris Voorn. Todd has had plenty of studio experience, both as a part of House of Downtown with Christiaan Ercolano, and also as an engineer for both Kim and The Presets. However, he's only been producing on his own over the past couple of years, with his first solo EP coming out on Darren Emerson's Underwater label back in 2006. This year has seen him release his track "Rumpelstiltskin" on the digital arm of Claude VonStroke's Dirtybird label, and with more to come for them, you should keep your eye out for Emerson's own brand of driving tech-house. We caught up with Emerson to ask him about the mix, The Presets and the scene in Sydney. What have you been working on recently? I have been in the studio a lot with a remix of Worthy's "Mad Cap" on Anabatic Records due out next month as well as an EP on Suruba Digital. Tracks from these are on this mix in fact. Early next year I have an EP on Anabatic coming out as well and an EP on Trapez with a remix from good friend Tim Green. You've mixed records by Kim and The Presets before. How does it feel to be stepping out from behind the desk into the limelight? Firstly it's great to work with such talented guys as Kim and Julian. They really know their shit and you learn a lot from experiences like that. I find it easier to mix other people's music as you don't have the emotional connection that you do with your own stuff. Saying that, I'm thoroughly enjoying concentrating on my own music these days and I'm really excited by the reactions that I'm currently getting. How and where was the mix recorded? The mix was recorded at home with Traktor Scratch on a lovely sunny Sunday about seven weeks ago. Can you tell us a little about the mix? I wanted to do something on a slightly deep and percussive tip that had a bit of a journey to it. Most importantly I wanted to have fun and hopefully that comes across in the mix. What's the house and techno scene in Sydney like? The scene is obviously smaller than in Europe, but it is thriving and I'm lucky to play at some of the best nights in Sydney as a resident at Lost Baggage and also at the Pulse Radio parties. Pulse started doing parties this summer, and they're doing some of the maddest events in the country. Luciano is set to play on an amazing boat on one of the most beautiful harbours in the world, and then they're following this up with the Dirtybird crew on the same boat. Claude VonStroke, Christian Martin and Gucci Soundsystem play that one, and I'm also very excited to say that Mathew Jonson from Wagon Repair will be doing another of their parties. It's going to be a lot of fun down here this summer! What are you up to next? I am doing remixes at the moment. I'm just finishing off a remix for the Spektre guys on Suruba and also starting a new remix for Layo & Bushwacka. In January I'm also going to be doing some work with Kevin Griffiths from Tsuba, which I'm really looking forward to, and then I'll end the Australian summer with some time in the studio with Tim Green before I head over to Europe.
