- In his role as label manager, Jon Berry is one of the central figures at Kompakt, the celebrated Cologne outfit that has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Although originally from Canada, his roots in electronic music are tied to New York, which is where he made the transition from punk rocker to raver. Berry fell in with the Brooklyn scene that centred on labels like Lenny Dee's Industrial Strength, with whom he scored his first job in the industry as an unpaid intern. After some time spent time working in PR, he wound up at the Force Inc and Mille Plateaux stable, and through the latter met Kompakt's Wolfang Voigt. Fast-forward a few years and Berry made a move over to Cologne and was welcomed into the Kompakt family, a position he's now held for the last six years. On the occasion of Kompakt's on-going 20th birthday celebrations, we took the opportunity to chat with Berry about the inner workings of the famed institution.
