  • To say that Mark Barrott has had an atypical journey to where he is today would be underselling it enormously. His first major move in music came as ambient drum & bass producer Future Loop Foundation. Barrott released a trio of albums in the late '90s under the alias, and was the first artist to perform drum & bass live on the UK's Radio 1. But Barrott said he was always treated as an outsider within drum & bass circles, and eventually became involved in Berlin's downtempo scene after moving to the city in 1999. Although he continued releasing and making music throughout the '00s, a large part of the decade was spent writing music for television, and eventually helming a highly successful music consultancy company. Barrott almost ran himself into the ground with the venture, and decided eventually to relocate to the Uruguayan coast. It was there he began International Feel, a label he says was born out of a "determination to do things in a certain way." The label has since become a bastion of high quality Balearic music and the home to what at the time represented DJ Harvey's first solo material for a decade. Barrott's work ethic and exacting personality have been the defining factors in all of this, and both were abundantly clear when we sat down for this conversation in Berlin recently.
